Horse Riding Tips

We’ve put together a list of top horse riding tips to help you look and feel at your very best in the saddle!

Consistency is key! When it comes to both your own progression and that of your horse, don’t expect to achieve your goals instantly. Even the most experienced riders rely on practice, whether you’re getting to grips with a new dressage movement, a tricky jumping exercise, or working on your own position in the saddle. Consistent practice is the best way to improve and achieve your goals.

Dress to impress! Though you may not realise it, what you wear in the saddle can have a huge impact on your riding. It’s important to wear appropriate and well-fitting clothing, boots, and a hat so that you feel comfortable and can perform at your best.

Turn that frown upside down! Horses are very sensitive animals who can pick up on the subtlest of clues from our behaviour. If you’re angry or upset when you’re in the saddle, this is likely to have a negative effect on your horse and on your riding. A bad mood often makes our bodies tense, which in turn can make your horse feel anxious too. A tense body also has a negative impact on our position and aids in the saddle, so take a deep breath and approach riding with a positive attitude.

There’s always more to learn! Even the very best professional riders still have coaching in order to perform at their best, so don’t be afraid to book a lesson, ask questions, and be open to critique. This is how you improve your riding and you’re bound to feel better as a result. Receiving some friendly advice from a fellow equestrian also means you’ll be told what you’re doing well too, giving you a great confidence boost.

This may sound like an obvious one, but looking ahead and in the direction you want to travel is crucial to riding well. Looking down in the saddle can make you unbalanced and stops you from preparing for your turns and what is ahead.

Don’t give up! Horse riding isn’t easy and there might be times when you feel frustrated or disappointed.

And finally, relax and enjoy yourself! Though there may be times when you feel frustrated, horse riding is ultimately hugely rewarding, and spending time in the saddle should always be a fun experience that puts a smile on your face.
